Summer is traditionally wedding season, and our congratulations go out to all of the newly married couples starting out their lives together. But we also want to remind you of your obligation to report your new marital status to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other government agencies. Before you sit down to write out all those “thank you” cards, be sure to take care of the following:
- Report any name changes to the Social Security Administration so they can update their records of your lifetime earnings
- Provide your employer with an updated W-4 form with your new name and any changes to withholding
- If you have moved to a new home, file a “change of address” Form 8822 with the IRS
- If you have a Health Insurance Marketplace plan and received an advanced premium credit, you’ll need to report any changes in circumstances to the Marketplace
We wish you a lifetime of happiness, joy and joint tax returns! If you have any questions about these tips or any other tax issues, please contact Gray, Gray & Gray’s Tax Department at (781) 407-0300.
